Wines Of Washington Festival

Fairweather Masonic Lodge # 82 in Tacoma will be hosting our second annual event here in Tacoma, to celebrate smaller and newer Washington Wineries.  We are  dedicated to a five year plan to organize and grow the Wines of Washington (WOW) program each year, and have it be one of the premier wine tastings in the state by the five year mark.  It will then continue to be a heralded annual event for as long as it is viable.

We are aiming for an attendance of 500 people this year. We will be having a  guest lecture on a variety of topics such as mating wine and food, dessert wines, how to judge wines, etc.  This will be done at a central stage, and should be useful information for the guests, and give them something to look at or listen to.  Several vendors of companion products such as meats and cheeses, or deserts may also give short informative talks.

Live music will be playing in the background to lend an ambience to the event.  The event shall take place outside in a covered and secured area, in the middle of ten acres of grasslands and trees.  Power shall be available at each table, if necessary.  We will be setting up at Noon, and open up to the public at 2:00,  lasting until about 6:00, or until the crowd thins out. There will also be a secured, staffed location for any minor dependants, should any arrive with a parent.

Every year, each winery may enter 4 wines for the  awards program.  All wines offered for awards shall be judged by a panel of local wine shop owners, and overseen by a head judge.  The winners of both categories, (best white and best red) shall receive a Gold ribbon for first or a Silver Ribbon for second place.  As the focus of this wine tasting is, and shall remain to be, small Washington wineries, (5000 cases or smaller production) this will be regarded as a benchmark for the smaller newer wineries.  As such, I expect the Medals to become highly sought after, and much coveted in the ensuing years, as the wine community will be looking to us to pick the best new wineries of our region. At the end of the wine tasting we shall have an auction for assorted items.

The entrance price shall be 12.50 at the door, and advance tickets are available for 11.00.  This entrance price shall get a guest four tastings, and a nice meal. Each guest shall be fed a meal of Fettuccini Alfredo, fresh salad, and some bread.  Additional tastes may be purchased at the cost of 50 cents per, and will be presold as tickets.  One ticket  per tasting.

The purpose of the wine tasting is to act as a fund raiser for our scholarship program.  Fairweather Lodge gives 3 scholarships each year to Tacoma Public School students, and Masonic Youth.  The scholarships are worth 1500.00 each.  We also give an additional 1000.00 scholarship to one of the three finalists.  We have been doing a scholarship program for ten years now, and look forward to seeing it continue in some shape or form for the foreseeable future.  100% off all proceeds from this wine tasting shall be contributed to the scholarship fund to help keep it solvent and fully funded.
